To all members of the 17th Artillery Regiment Association. When I accepted the presidency of this organization I truly wanted to bring it to the next level. I have again left the position of president. On the web will be a statement indicating for personal reasons. I can tell you one of the reasons was my JOB , I have been putting in long hours and it was taking its toll on me. The running of the organization is very time consuming, for those who would like to know the other reasons you may contact me at pfevt@optionline .net . Let it be known in an e-mail to my board members never use the word resign, again I can explain that. I want everyone to know I have been proud to serve with the 17th Artillery and I will continue to support the organization. The organization needs more members, so I ask all of you to continue to search for other’s who have served with the 17th Artillery. In Brotherhood Paul Fusco

Hello 17th Artillery Veterans, as some of you already know the 1/17th Artillery at Fort Sill, OK is again deploying to Iraq for their 2nd tour. This time they are deploying a bit different. Currently B/1/17 (125 men, plus the Sergeant Major and Battalion Commander) are already there with the remainder of the battalion deploying a few days after Christmas. We have experienced and all know that the Christmas Holidays are the loneliest during the entire short tour whether in combat or not... We need to show them that we care and support them. I am asking you all to join me in contributing toward their well being. Our association Vice President is in charge of obtaining all of the items that are needed to make this Christmas Holiday Season better for them. It is quicker to send money so that the items needed can be purchased and sent right away. We do not have very much time to get this together. Let’s all pitch in and do something good. Please donate to this worth while cause. Remember your donations are tax deductible. We will furnish receipts. Please send checks or money orders to the Association Treasurer at the following address. Make the checks or money order payable to: 17th Artillery Regiment Association Richard Siebe 5513 Whitfield Way , Carmichael, CA. 95608 Hope to see all of you in Charleston 11-14 October 2006. Sincerely, Norman R. (Richard) Jones

I am trying to locate all the Forward Observers who served with SRAP 1/50th Infantry between Aug 1968 and August 1969. Rick Hanley was from Long Island , and spent about 6 months with the platoon between 8/68 and 2/69. Some guys called him "The Butler" He was last seen at LZ Action in April 1968 by John Smerdon, a squad leader with A 1/50. Larry Hickman, Jim Guyton and Mike Taylor also served with SRAP as FOs, but all of these soldiers were attached after the 1/50 began operating from LZ Uplift in April 1969. No one can remember their hometowns, but some say that Guyton was from TN or AL, Hickman from NY or PA and Taylor was possibly born in the UK . My home phone is 419-832-0705 (after 5 PM EST ) if anyone can help us locate any of these Forward Observers. Thanks.

On Nov. 12, 2005 the Ia Drang Survivors Banquet will be held in Washington DC . It will be the 40th anniversary of the battle in the Ia Drang Valley in which C Battery supported the 1st Cav from LZ Columbus and then LZ Crook. I attended a dinner in 2000 and had a great experience but noticed very little participation from the artillery units from the 1/21 FA and C Battery 2/17th, who fired in support. Is anyone interested in attending the banquet? They moved it to a larger facility as the old site was usually filled at 200. The new site will handle 1500. It is open to everyone as the banquet is a fundraiser for their scholarship program. Tom Kurtz recently found out that C Battery veterans and families, who were in the valley, are eligible for the scholarship. $55 for the banquet. Contact me if you are interested in more details.

Norman Jones and his wife have just left the house to go back to Austin . They gave Shirley and I love and comfort and support. Norman took some pictures after I cut trees all week. He took two rolls of pictures I took on Saturday Sept. 24 while Rita was still blowing. He also gave me and Shirley money from the Association and Doug Runice. Shirley and I thank all of you from the bottom of our hearts. We appreciate your generosity and your support but feel like we have adequate resources that will take care of our needs and there are so many people here worse off than we are.

Looking for anyone who served in C/2/17 at Camp Pelham , ROK from 1975-1976. Battery commander was CPT Harpold. He left for emergency leave and the battery was taken command of by 2LT Ed Johnson. CPT White later came in to command. The BN commander during that time was COL. Stone. The fire base there was 4-PAPA-1. The two guard posts in the DMZ were GP Collier and GP Ollet. I was an FO for six months then FDO for the remainder of my time there. Drop me a line if you were there! Hugh

To All: I just got off the phone with Jean Cagle, sister of Thomas Vernor (Top Vernor as everyone calls him). Tom made it out of the hurricane path and into Alabama and stayed with a nephew until it passed over. He then went back home the next day and is remaining there. He has taken in 4 people to provide them a place to stay and is guarding his place from looters with a shotgun. He is without electricity and phone service etc. They expect to have some utilities by Wed 6 September. Tom is in good health etc. and doing fine.

17th Artillery Regiment Association's Annual Reunion 2005 in Seattle . The long range weather forecast reflects good weather, for the month of September. Days 70-80, nights 60-70. If you are attending the reunion I would still bring a jacket and/or sweater. Also an umbrella, as it can rain at anytime in the Northwest. Will see everyone in Seattle .

Thanks for this site. You have done a great job. Wish I could drive up from Portland to Seattle for the reunion, but there are no funds available at present. Speaking of funds, I am working on a VA claim and need to find buddies from B Battery, 2nd/17th who were at FB Colgan, outside DaLat, during the latter part of 1970. Those of us on Sgt. Steve Jeffries' gun went on a couple hip shoots that I must pinpoint or have an incident verified by a buddy. I would especially like to locate Michael Murphy or Johnny Long. Hope I can be of help to someone else, too.
